Second World War 1939-1945, shipwreck
Remains of a Japanese submarine RO-60 beached on the reef. Large pieces used to be visible at low tide but it's corroding away. The dark streaks on the reef are rust.
The RO-60 was laid down at Mitsubishi Yard on 5 December 1921 as a medium 990-ton L4 type submarine and ran aground on the reef on 29 December 1941. She was a part of the IJN's Submarine Squadron 7, Division 26 assigned to Kwajalein and, along with RO-61 and 62, were later assigned to Wake Occupation Group on 12 December 1941.
She was strafed sometime during the war, which caused her torpedoes to explode and blow her apart.
