Sixty-four mile stretch of 3-foot gauge railroad track that runs from here to Chama, New Mexico. The scenic railroad is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties, and the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties, and is designated a National Historic Landmark District. Additionally, the American Society of Civil Engineers has recognized the railroad as a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
From the property's NRHP nomination form:
"The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is a remnant of one of the most important parts of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, historically speaking. Due to the rugged terrain and the low density of population, northern New Mexico and southwestern Colorado remained one of the most seldom seen parts of our land. For probably half a century, the railroad was the only means of transportation over long distances, the only source of consumer goods, and the only source of news from "the world outside" that the inhabitants of this region had"
