railway, summit, abandoned / shut down, mountain pass, historical layer / disappeared object
The Denver, Northwestern and Pacific Railway constructed a railroad line across the Continental Divide from Denver, which reached the 11,680' summit in the Fall of 1904. Winter weather and 4% grades made this line unworkable, and it was replaced by Moffat Tunnel in 1928.
The Rollins Pass route was last used during 1929.
America's railroads built 31 crossings over the Divide, of which 10 other crossings remain in use.
