As of 2009, the population of the city was 35,252, with the greater Fairbanks metropolitan area having a population of 97,970.

Koyukon Athabascans had populated the area for thousands of years before the modern settlement began when gold was discovered nearby in 1901-1902. By 1910, the city grew from nothing to a permanent population of 3,500 with an additional 6,000 transient miners.

The first airstrip was graded in 1938, and the city grew further in response to supporting the AlCan Highway and Alaska Pipeline construction in the 1970's.
