Nanaimo's Bastion, the oldest building in the city, was constructed in 1853 as a fortification which housed a cannon to protect the early settlement's harbour.

Daily noon cannon firing: the Bastion is well known for its exciting cannon firing ceremony which takes place at noon during the summer from Victoria Day to Labour Day.
