The Korean Democratic Women's Union, an organization for women who, because of their occupation, are not affiliated with any other popular organizations such as a labor, military or student group. It has a membership of 200,000. It was one of the first popular political organizations to be founded in the DPRK, in November 1945. The KDWU concerns itself with matters of marriage, family planning and family life. It was initially founded as part of a mobilization campaign for women to enter the manufacturing and heavy industry sectors of the DPRK economy. In many heavy industrial complexes, women can make up half the workforce. DPRK President Kim il Sung's second wife, Kim Song-ae, headed the KDWU from 1971 to 1998.
