Pui Tak Center (Chicago, Illinois)

USA / Illinois / Chicago / Chicago, Illinois / South Wentworth Avenue, 2216
landmark, community centre / hall, historical building

The Pui Tak Center, originally named the On Leong Merchants Association Building, was
constructed from 1926 to 1928 at a cost of $1,000,000 and was designed by architects Christian S. Michaelsen and Sigurd A. Rognstad. The On Leong Merchants Association used the building as an immigrant assistance center housing meeting halls, a school, a shrine, and their offices. From 1941 to 1961, the St. Therese Chinese Catholic School was housed in the building. In 1988, the FBI and the Chicago Police raided the building as part of a racketeering investigation, and it was later seized by the U.S. Federal Government. The building sat vacant until 1993, when it was sold to the Chinese Christian Union Church and underwent a $1,000,000 renovation until 1995. The building is now in use as the Pui Tak Center, a community center for Chinatown. The three-floor building has a floor area of 30,000 sq ft (2,787 sq m).

The building was designated a Chicago Landmark on December 1, 1993.

"Pui Tak" is a translation for "Cultivation and Enhancement of Virtues".
