The city purchased the abandoned railroad right-of-way along the south side of 17th Street from Avenue P eastward to the river, to be redeveloped as a "linear green space" and pedestrian pathway. Landscaping and construction of the pedestrian linkage began in May 2007 and was completed in October 2007.
