The Fort Howes Fire Station is located on the Custer National Forest, 20 miles south of Ashland, Montana. Improvements on the site include offices, helitack office and hangar, three helipads suitable for Type II helicopters, cache, weight room, shop, three engine bays, and barracks with laundry facilities.
The station is staffed by an Assistant Fire Management Officer (AFMO), Fire Operations Supervisor, Helicopter Supervisor and Module, and three Type 6 engines (E-265, E-266 & E-267). BLM personnel have direct suppression responsibility for BLM and USFS Custer National Forest land in Powder River County and portions of Custer, Rosebud and Big Horn Counties.
