The popular picnic spot, Ottakkal (one rock), is a huge single rock covering an area of 36 acres situated at a place called Urukunnu near Thenmala in Kollam district of Kerala. The top of the rock is 2000 ft above the sea level.
Along the trek, from various vantage points one can have splendid views of different sections of Thenmala like the adjoining hills, forests, the Kallada Dam with the river canal and the lake behind it, the railway line that passes by the mountain bases and over arched stone bridges.
On top, we can find a rocky outcrop, with two pedestal rocks on the northern side and the ancient Mahabharath time Pandavanpara Shree Shivaparvathi temple towards the south. The air here is crisp, fresh and surrounding view is simply magnificent. The place has few caves on its eastern flank, and these are believed to have been used by the Pandavas, during their time of exile.
There is a holy spring to quench thirst of the pilgrims at the top of the mount which is believed to have healing powers.
