On 14 May 1917, Romanian 2nd Lieutenant Emil Rebreanu was hanged for attempted desertion by the Austro-Hungarian army. Upon the outbreak of World War I, 2nd Lt Emil Rebreanu was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian forces and fought on several fronts. But his removal to the lines to fight against the independent Romanian state was a front too far: he attempted to cross the lines to the Romanians on the night of May 10-11 1917, but was captured, court-martialed, and sentenced to hang. He was buried in Palanca cemetery.

Liviu Rebreanu's 1922 novel "Forest of the Hanged"(ro:'Pădurea spânzuraţilor'), as well as its 1965 film adaptation, draws upon the experience of his brother Emil.
