Fort Sheridan was founded as an Army base in the late 19th century. The driving force behind its establishment was unease over the possibility of further labor unrest after the Haymarket riots in nearby Chicago. Troops from Fort Sheridan were used for this purpose only once - during the Pullman strike in 1894.

The base operated from 1888 until its closure in 1993.

Today, Fort Sheridan has been redeveloped as a residential community. Redevelopment has included environmental cleanup and restoration of the historic original buildings, which were designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1984.
