The English actor Robert Shaw, best known for his work in 'Jaws', 'The Sting', 'A Man for All Seasons' and 'From Russia with Love', lived for seven years in Tourmakeady, until his death in 1978. In August 2008, a stone memorial was erected in his honor. The memorial, overlooking Lough Mask, bears an inscription to the actor whose love for his adopted Gaeltacht village was evident to all.

It has been inscribed with the words: "In honour of Robert Shaw who lived in Tourmakeady. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam." (May he rest in peace.)

The plaque was erected near the point where he died of a heart attack, aged 51, on the road into the village, near a small marina on the lake shore.
