Croppies Acre was named in 1983 after the Croppies (so called because of
their short hair cuts) of the 1798 Rebellion who were executed in the vicinity.
At one time the area was known as the Crimean Trophy Plot because of the
presence of Russian artillery guns captured during the 1854-56 Crimean
War. The site was originally part of the Military Recreation Grounds
and is now partly under Wolfe Tone Quay. In 1985 a large granite
memorial was erected to commemorate all those buried here.
