school, 1964_construction, Modern (architecture)
3-story modernist-style school completed in 1964. It was originally named The Sol Bloom School; it was renamed in 1994 for Lillian Weber, a pioneer in Open Corridor education (without classroom walls) and a consultant who worked at the Sol Bloom School. The attached playground still carried the Sol Bloom name.
The north facade of the school building along 92nd Street has beige brick piers and a beige brick section at the east end, where the main entrance is, with a 5x10 grid of recessed squares above. The entrance is three red metal doors with transoms, set in a rounded, brown granite molding. To the west there are 14 more bays, with variegated reddish-brown brick spandrels. They all have large triple-windows at the ground floor, except for the 7th bay from the east, which has another entrance with two red metal doors set in a red metal surround with high transoms above. The upper floors have shorter, wide 3-over-3 windows with horizontal panes in peach-colored metal framing. A metal and metal-mesh railing tops the roof line, and the building is set behind a rainbow-colored metal fence.
The west facade facing the playground has no openings at the north end, where the brick is painted with a mural. The south part of this section has a set of red metal doors at the ground floor, and another grid of recessed squares above, this one 4x11. To the south end of the west facade is a mirror-image, with another mural, doors, and grid. The center section has six bays of windows between brick piers, like those on the north facade, but with murals painted along the base.
The south facade matches the north facade, but is set farther back from 91st Street, the western entrance is in the 6th bay from the west, and the base is painted a different bright color at each bay. The interior contains a mural by Max Spivak titled "Central Park As A Refuge" which was installed in 1964.
