office building, skyscraper
469-foot, 34-story International-style office building completed in 1971. Designed by Emery Roth & Sons, it is clad in black steel and dark-tinted glass, above a 2-story base with grey granite piers. The main entrance in on 56th Street, in the 2nd bay from the east (there are five total bays). It has glass double-doors and a revolving door set in a glass wall at the ground floor, with a metal screen above that has the address of 1370 printed on it. To the left of the entrance, the interior wall extends out past the building line a short bit into the plaza, lined with horizontal white marble panels. This wall extends up through the 2nd floor, and then cantilevers over the entry bay, with the white marble panels continuing to line the underside. A lower, 1-story wall of grey granite extends a bit farther out on the left. The easternmost bay has a loading dock with a roll-down metal gate below metal louvers. The two bays to the west of the entrance, and the westernmost bay (which is set back the width of one bay) have tripartite plate-glass storefront windows.
The west facade on the avenue has four bays, the north one set back, all containing additional tripartite windows. At the upper floors each bay has four window panes divided by thin black mullions. There are mechanical levels at the 16th-17th floors, with narrow, vertical vents lining each window opening along the west facade (except for at the recessed bay).
The east bay on the north facade (which is also the north bay on the east facade) ends above the 12th floor, leaving notched corners at the northwest and northeast extending all the way up to the roof line. Besides the lobby, the ground floor is occupied by a Chase Bank branch, and a Duane-Reade pharmacy.
