Namesake ship of her class of SuperCarriers, USS Nimitz commissioned into US Navy service in May 1975 as a member of the US Atlantic Fleet. Transferring oceans in 2001 after her mid-life overhaul and refuelling, the Nimitz now operates as a member of the US Pacific Fleet homeported at Naval Station Everett, Washington.
As the oldest member of the Nimitz Class, she is expected to remain in service to a forecast decomissioning date around the year 2030, when she will be 55 years old.
