military, radio station
This 1-megawatt NAVRADSTA VLF radio transmitter transmits very low frequency (10 - 20 kHz), very high power radio waves -- primarily sending messages to submarines. Built in 1953 in the foothills of the northern Cascades, ten massive antenna cables, all more than a mile long, span the Jim Creek valley, suspended by twenty 200-foot tall towers.
It is also a Regional Outdoor Recreation Area for active duty personnel, reservists, retirees, DoD civilians, and sponsored guests.
