Historic monument cast in bronze with a granite base. The statue was designed in part by Carl Rohl-Smith, who died part of the way through the design process. It was finished gradually by other sculptors between 1896 and 1903. The monument is one of 18 sites collectively listed on the National Register of Historic Places as "Civil War Monuments in Washington, D.C."
