588-foot, 55-story postmodern residential building completed in 2008. Designed by Fox & Fowle, it uses air rights from the charming, adjacent Church of the Transfiguration, known familiarly as the Little Church Around The Corner at 1 East 29th Street. The 3-story base of Sky House is clad in red brick that matches that of the church, except for the street-facing facade, which features four bays of reflective silver glass and grey metal, set at sharp angles. A new parish hall for the church occupies the lower floors of the tower.
Set back above the base, the very slender tower rises vertically to the roof line. The south facade has eight narrow bays of single-windows between unbroken piers. On the west side, there are five windows at the south end, a 6-window recessed central portion in more of a grid pattern, and a shorter red brick expanse at the north end with a single bay of windows at the left and right. The eastern elevation has a central, blank concrete wall housing the core; on the south end is a red brick portion with two bays of windows, mirrored at the north end, which is several floors shorter.
The very narrow north facade has bands of windows divided by red brick spandrels between floors, highlighted by white stone bands below each spandrel. The north side of the tower is deeply set behind a 4-story projection out to the sidewalk, also clad in dark-red ironspot brick. It is four bays wide, with two metal service doors at the outer bays of the ground floor, which is occupied by Open Center Adult Education School.
Sky House contains 139 condominium units. Amenities at the Sky House include full time doorman & concierge, fitness center, children’s playroom and storage units available for sale.
