Apple Upper East Side

USA / New Jersey / West New York / Madison Avenue, 926
store / shop, Apple, interesting place, movie / film / TV location, 1922_construction

Designed by architect Henry Otis Chapman and constructed in 1922 as the Madison Avenue branch of the United States Mortgage & Trust Company bank. Chapman was typically known for his design of Long Island Country homes like "Forker House" and "Blythewood". The Beaux-Arts building was composed out of Indiana limestone and Tennessee pink marble with marble wainscoting, pilasters, plaster capitals, and wrought metal chandeliers.

Prior to Apple, the building served home to locations for several luxury brands. They partnered with architects Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Aurora Lampworks, EverGreene Architectural Arts, and Nine Stone Marble & Tile to restore the original grandeur. Botticino marble was sourced from Italy to reconstruct floor finishes, wainscoting, and pilasters. Although the original light fixtures in the grand hall do not exist, the team recreated replicas based on photos. The original vault as well was retained as a private sales room. It has since won numerous awards for its sympathetic adaptive reuse.

The interior was used as a filming location for S2E6 of the HBO original series "Sex and the City/And Just Like That".
