The "Ellis Island of the West", the transit station processed 175,000 Asian immigrants to the US. Due to tough restrictions such as the Chinese Exclusion Act, many stayed for as long as two years. Many poems have been carved into the walls of the buildings. After the administrative building burned down in 1940, processing was held in San Francisco. Later held the first Japanese POW in WWII.
