Fort O'Brien State Historic Site

Site of the first Naval Battle of the Revolution, this park overlooks the Machias River at the spot where in 1776 local militia, formed for this purpose, overtook the British sloop Margaretta with their smaller ship the Unity. Here they boarded and outfought the British, took the Captain and his crew prisoner, and sailed the Margaretta back up the river to Machias.

Under the Second System of 1807, there was constructed a circular battery of stone, mounting four heavy guns, covered by a blockhouse.
