Fortress Haasdonk is one of the 32 fortifications belonging to the 95 Km. long outer defending girdle around Antwerp.
Build in 1909 along with 10 new fortresses and 12 redoubt as a new defense line to prevent that Antwerp could be bombed by cannons with larger firing range.
1900 the fortress is being modernized a layer of concrete and gun turrets are placed on top of the fortress.
1914 the fortress is handover to the Germans, no shots were fired to or from the fortress.
1918 the fortress is handover back to the Belgians.
1927 Decommissioned as fortification it is used as gunpowder depot for fortress Zwijndrecht that is used as ammunitions production facility.
WW II, it becomes a depot and training area for the German army.
1943 Germans place anti air artillery.
1944 Civilians use the fortress as shelter to the V1-V2 attacks on Antwerp.
1945 The army uses the fortress as depot.
198? The army sells the fortress.
2002 Classified as protected monument the fortress is not open to visitors.
Today it is a winter hibernation area for bats.
