12-story modernist/brutalist prison building completed in 1975. Designed by Gruzen & Partners, it is clad in brown brick with inset, recessed square windows and horizontal bands of dark-tinted glass. There are a number of angles on the facades, and a caged-in rooftop recreation area. It was built at the same time as the neighboring United States Attorney's Office, with a similar facade.

MCC New York is an administrative facility designed to house federal prisoners of all security levels, including both male and female offenders appearing before the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Prisoners are assigned to ten separate, self-contained housing units, resulting in little movement within the facility.

Inmates at the facility have included Faisal Shahzad, Bernard Madoff, Cameron Douglas, son of famous actor Michael Douglas, Jackie D'Amico, John Gotti, Frank Lucas, Raffaello Follieri, and Omar Abdel-Rahman. It currently houses around 750 inmates, although it was originally only designed for 450.
