This historic place was founded in 1871 as FROG POINT in the northeast quarter of section 22-148-49, Belmont Township. On August 20, 1879 the name was changed to BELLMONT. A townsite was platted in 1880, and a population of 75 was reported in 1890. Without a railroad the town declined, and the post office closed April 30, 1909 with mail to Buxton, ten miles to the west. Most of the town was destroyed by fire in 1912, and it was never rebuilt. The site today is marked by a plaque, and is now an old settlers' park named Bellmont Park. Although BELLMONT was the official name, nearly all references spell the name as BELMONT.
