This was a rural post office established September 25, 1907 in the southeast quarter of section 18-158-91, Lostwood Township and named for its township, which owes its name to the story of a man who about 1900 cut some wood to be used for making slaked lime and left it here to dry. Others found it and used it as fuel to heat their homes that winter. The man returned the next spring, and the wood was "lost. Others say the name commemorates the legend of a load of wood that was lost in a blizzard. The post office moved to the new Great Northern Railroad townsite in Section 23-158-91 in 1912, retaining its name. The elevation is 2343, and a population of 100 was reported in 1920, but the town has declined rapidly and is now nearly a ghost town. The post office, Zip Code 58754, closed April 1, 1974 with mail to Stanley.
