State Line Power Plant was a 515-megawatt coal fired electric power generating facility. It served the Chicago area, and was built between 1926-29 in Art Deco style by the architectural firm Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, for Samuel Insull.
July 28, 1998, a coal dust explosion at the plant injured 17 employees. The plant shut down as of March 31, 2012 and plant was demolished between 2012-2014.
The State Line Power Plant site is home to the Illinois-Indiana State Line Boundary Marker, a 15 1/2-foot tall obelisk built in 1838 by the Office of the US Surveyor-General. The marker stands near the entrance to the former plant.
