Estate home designed c. 1916 in the French Renaissance style by Ogden Codman, Jr. on originally 21 acres of land for Walter Effingham Maynard {capitalist, financier, publisher}. Maynard served as president of Dranyam Realty Corp., vice president of Fifth Avenue Building Co., director of Detroit, Hillsdale & Southwest Railway Co., Metropolitan Trust Co., and Small, Maynard & Co.

The home included paneling imported from a French chateau. Landscaping by Ellen Biddle Shipman in 1930 with Jacques Geber who designed the garden, fountain, and reflecting pool. The estate was purchased by Patrice Munsel who renamed the estate "Malmaison" and subsequently by John L. Maddocks, Jr. in 1975.

It reportedly declined into near-ruinous shape following Maddocks' tenure until 1995, when it was sold and totally overhauled. The reflecting pool with fountain has since been replaced with a swimming pool. In 1993, Martin Scorcese used the estate for a scene in "The Age of Innocence" (1993).
