Vilske ( Russian ) cemetery.
Russian Orthodox cemetery in the present street Peremohy relatively well preserved. This cemetery is also called Vilskim - from the name of the street (the former name of the street Peremohy - Vilsko-Shosseyna, then Velyka Vilskaya). At the entrance to the cemetery is Yakovlevskaya Church, built in 1837 in the canonical style, an architectural monument. The existence of this temple on Vilskom cemetery citizens are obliged to Princess Olga Feodorovna Potemkin, who decided to perpetuate the memory of her late husband - Lieutenant General James A. Prince Potemkin, and raised on his grave stone church. October 24, 1837 the church was "sanctified by the rite." Worth noting is the fact that it was the first Orthodox stone church of the city. All other Orthodox shrines Zhitomir at the time were made of wood. In this cemetery are buried many prominent people of our city. For example, just a few names: Sergey Karpenko - Ukrainian actor, People's Artist of the USSR, Simon Sharzhinsky - Volyn provincial postmaster, a close friend of Nikolai Gogol and Alexander Pushkin, Taras Shevchenko and familiar academic painting Mokritski Apollo, patron of the arts with a very interesting life, Mr. Constantine Roche, the only daughter of the world-famous philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev. Russian (Vilskoe) Cemetery - a unique monument of history and culture, monumental art. Compared with others, this cemetery was more fortunate, since the 1930s it served as the center of the city cemetery, but there are also traces of barbarism here.
