At the end of XIX and beginning of the twentieth century, the Jewish community was the largest in Zhitomir. Zhytomyr was then one of the centers of Jewish cultural and religious life. Buried in the cemetery of the Jewish tzadiks (saints), who made a lot of good for our city's artists, doctors, teachers, lawyers, engineers, architects. During the XIX and early XX century, it created unique monuments, many of which were destroyed during the Soviet period, especially during the German occupation of the city. Cemetery partially preserved. Almost all the graves of the XIX century destroyed. In the 1970s on the old part of the cemetery on the left side of the river Putyatinka built a large garage cooperative, SWC "The Internationale," the core of college sports number 15. In the back of the cemetery next to the alley Putyatinsky in mass graves buried hundreds of victims of Bolshevik repression 1937 - 1940 period. According to the Embassy of the Czech Republic, September 28, 1938 at the Jewish cemetery in Zhitomir were executed and buried 77 Czechs, who lived and worked in Zhytomyr and in the surrounding villages.
