Long twisty-turny road from Clifton-Morenci to Springerville. Motorcycling nirvana. Correctly named "US 666" because it was the sixth spur route from Route 66; renamed at taxpayer expense, in a blatantly unconstitutional government pandering to superstition.

  • Superstition? I'm shocked - shocked!
  • "....blatantly unconstitutional government pandering to superstition?" LMAO.
  • I am curious though. How did it really get it's name? Who named it? Why did it get that name?
  • I drove this road years ago in my old Nissan Stanza. It was a hell of a drive and I loved every mile of it. I think they called it the Devil;'s highway for 2 reasons. 1) It was US 666 back when I drove it. 2) the switchbacks are so sharp that it can make it on hell of a drive. Some parts are just plain scary.
  • *rolls eyes* What part of the constitution did the government violate when they renumbered this route? The truth is, It was renumbered due to sign theft, and because its parent route (US 66) no longer existed, along with the need for an odd number since it's a north-south route. Of interest, the highway was rerouted in 2019 on a more direct route through the bottom of the old Morenci pit through a series of tunnels to grade separate the highway from haul road traffic. As of September 2019, the old scenic view overlooking the pit is no longer accessible.
