About the John Neilson High School.
Opened in 1968 to replace the fee-paying John Neilson Institute (which became Oakshaw High School after the move to JNHS) which was built in 1852 and is still standing today albeit converted into flats. Fees were continued until 1970 at JNHS until 1970 at a rate of £7 and 7 shillings twice yearly to financially the transition to comprehensive schooling. JNHS was closed in 1989, just 21 years after it was built, and merged with Castlehead High School due to falling attendances. The school building was demolished in 2002.
