The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (5 SCOTS) is based at Howe Barracks in Canterbury. It is an Air Assault Battalion and part of 16 Air Assault Brigade, Britain's Rapid Reaction Force. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders was an infantry regiment of the British Army, part of the Scottish Division. In 2004, as part of the restructuring of the infantry, it was announced that the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders would be amalgamated with the other Scottish infantry regiments into the single Royal Regiment of Scotland, it is now known as The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (5 SCOTS).
5 SCOTS are currently deployed to Helmand Province in Afghanistan where they are responsible for training and mentoring the Afghan National Police as the PDATT (Police Development and Advisory Training Team).The battalion is spread all over Helmand from the provincial capital in Lashkar Gah and the second city of Gereshk to the outlying areas of Nahr-e-Seraj, Nad-e-ali and Babaji conducting daily patrols in partnership with the ANP and countering the threat posed by the Taleban to the local population.
The battalion is also responsible for the Helmand Police Training Centre outside Lashkar Gah which trains new recruits to the ANP and runs further career development training for serving Afghan policemen.
