Evergreen Hotel was built in about 1874 in the vicinity of the Evergreen Hamlet development in Ross Township. In the 1890s it became the Highland Club, an "exclusive gentlemen's club" that hosted corn roasts and other social events. The building later served as a night club, restaurant, hotel, and bar. A man-made cavern behind a hidden door was used as a speakeasy during Prohibition. In recent years the Evergreen housed a gentlemen's club of another kind, the kind with strippers. The club is no longer in operation; the building was seized by the state after its owner pled guilty to selling cocaine out of his top-floor unit.
