This neighborhood was filled with European immigrants a century ago. They gradually moved out, and the Hill District became primarily a black neighborhood. Pulitzer-winning playwright August Wilson set his plays here. Increasingly there are attempts to improve the neighborhood, which has fallen on hard times since the 1960s.
