Primarily a residential area, Polish Hill is home to one of Pittsburgh's oldest and largest churches, the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Large numbers of Polish immigrants settled the neighborhood in the later half of the 1800s. They had come primarily to work in Pittsburgh's burgeoning steel industry. After World War II, Polish Hill began to lose population, like many urban areas of the United States.
