Buffalo Savings Bank Building (Buffalo, New York)

USA / New York / Buffalo / Buffalo, New York / Fountain Plaza, 1
 bank, interesting place, historical building

Designed by architects Green & Wicks and completed in 1901, the Buffalo Savings Bank Building served as the grand headquarters of the Buffalo Savings Bank, a financial institution which when chartered only 50 years prior had only six depositors. Having grown in step with Buffalo’s meteoric rise to become the key bank of one of America’s largest cities, the Beaux Arts Classicism style building and its trademark Golden Dome was intended to showcase the financial power and prominence of Buffalo Savings Bank.

Further enhanced in the 1920’s with the addition of several murals by Francis, Savage & Davidson in its rotunda which display scenes from local history, industry and commerce, executed by Eugene Savage, William L. Smith, George Davidson, and William Francis. The building served as the headquarters of Buffalo Savings Bank until 1982 when it became the symbol for Buffalo Savings’ successive banking conglomerate; Goldome Bank. Briefly becoming one of the Nation’s largest savings banks, Goldome ran into financial troubles in the late 1980’s which eventually resulted in its insolvency and liquidation in 1991.

Subsequently purchased and operated as a branch of M&T Bank, the Buffalo Savings Bank Building is a now City of Buffalo landmark and one of the cornerstone buildings of today’s Fountain Square.

The address has a history: It was originally 545 Main Street but it was renamed to 1 Fountain Plaza.
