The Grand Hotel is well known for a number of notable visitors, including five U.S. presidents, inventor Thomas Edison, and author Mark Twain. The Movie Somewhere in Time starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour was filmed at the Grand. It is one of the most-recognizable features on Mackinac Island.
The interior contains a Dorothy Draper-designed light fixture which designed in 1953 for a restaurant in the Greek & Roman gallery of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. After it closed in 2003, one of the set was purchased by Carlton Varney for the hotel.
