St Catherine's Hospital (Bath)

United Kingdom / England / Bath / Bilbury Lane
 almshouse, Grade II Listed (UK)

Soon after 1435 William Philips, a wealthy clothier, built a row of almshouses in Bimbury Lane (now Bilbury Lane). After his death in 1444, the hospital was passed to the mayor and people of Bath.
There were 14 rooms around the courtyard. 12 were for patients. The other two were for a keeper and his wife, who looked after the place, and for a surgeon
Originally it stood on the oposite side of the lane, where the spa is now and the swimming baths before that but was rebuilt on its present site in 1829. It is now amalgamated with the older institution of St John’s Hospital. Public access to the interior is rarely possible.
The charity is now known as The Hospital of St John the Baptist with the Chapel of St Michael annexed with St Catherine's Hospital and operates to provide a home for 90 of the local elderly poor.
