Sydney Gardens is Bath’s oldest park, it was planned and laid out by the architect Harcourt Masters in 1795.
In 1800 the Kennet and Avon Canal was dug through the gardens, the engineer of the canals, John Rennie, designed most of the elegant iron bridges seen in the park.
Fortunately the canal added the charm of the gardens by being dug deeply between emankments.
In about 1839 work started on the section of the Great Western Railway that runs through the Gardens, effectively cutting the Gardens in half. Various garden features and buildings were destroyed but due to clever design and planning by Isambard Brunel another feature of interest was added to the gardens.
The gardens were purchased in 1909 by the city of Bath.
Sydney Gardens were included on English Heritage's Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest at Grade II on 25 June 1992
