The A36 trunk road running through the centre of the wood was originally the Black Dog Turnpike, a toll road - one of a number of other turnpikes between Bath and Warminster.
The Black Dog Turnpike Trust took its name from the pub within Black Dog Woods.
It is not known how the woods, the pub or the nearby hill on the A36 got their name but "black dog" features recurs many times in British fokelore--
