  • please, What is this place? so I can do some research on it, and put the information up. Thank you.
  • Its the 'baronial' house & estate of the Joliffe family, who have the inherited title 'Lord Hylton' as their titular head, & who has a seat in the House of Lords. The family have tranferred most of the estate houses (for former servants / maids / etc.) to Kilmersdon Housing Association, and the large house itself - Ammerdown - is now the 'home' of a christian-based Learning centre for resid - ential and day courses. Lord hylton still lives on the estate, and most of the lodges are intact & lived in. The grand Ammedown House & Park are mostly hidden from view to passers-by, though a prominent obilesk can be seen from miles around and from almost all directions. While the source of the Joliffe family wealth is obcsure - at least to me - the sinking of deep pits (coal) in the Radstock area took place mainly from the 18th C and provided Lord Hylton with mineral rights up until the closure of the last 2 pits in 1973 - which were linked and working measures under the Joliffe family's land at that time. In fact, it can be said that the last Somerset Coal was hewn from deep beneath the surface in quite close proximity to the Buckland Lodges on the Frome side of the estate. When the seams were being worked from Kilmersdon (Haydon) Pit, there was a requirement upon the National coal Board to leave a column of undisturbed ground of a prescribed size beneath Ammerdown House to protect its integrity. Whether any of this answers the query raised might be doubtful, though 'Lord hylton' woould be a starting point !!!!! John
