St James Cemetery (Bath)

United Kingdom / England / Bath / A36 Lower Bristol Road
 cemetery, Grade II Listed (UK)

The Widcombe, Lyncombe and St James' Cemetery was established in 1861 to the south of the River Avon and is located c. 1 mile from the historic core of Bath. The first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1888 illustrates the landscaped cemetery located between the Great Western Railway to the south and the Midland, Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway to the north and surrounded by terraced houses. The plan and layout of the cemetery has changed little since 1888. The mortuary chapel is located within the centre of the cemetery with paths laid out around to provide good views of the site. The lodge and gateway are depicted fronting Lower Bristol Road and form part of the northern boundary. The cemetery chapel, lodge, gateway and boundary wall were designed in 1861 by CE Davis who won the commission in a competition.
