Gray's Well was established by L.F. "Newt" Gray in 1915 as a Plank Road work camp. Gray, a local resident hired to supervise work on the road, sank a well here. Besides a small maintenance crew, Gray's Well also had a gas station and store to serve travelers. Maps of the period show a corral located directly east of Gray's Well: this housed draft animals that were used to keep the Plank Road scraped free of sand.
