  • It is in La Granja nursery where a local variety of sugar cane named Alunan was developed and prospered. In honor of Sec. Alunan of Agriculture, the variety was named after him. Since La granja is located in the town of La Carlota,it was sometimes referred to as La Carlota Variety of Sugar Cane. Alunan is a sweet variety and good for chewing out sweet juice out of it and it was comparable to a Badila variety which flourished in plantation of Negros,as being soft and sweet. Seldom can you find these varieties as they were replaced by hybrid sugar cane, more resistant to rats infestations and disease and producing much higher sugar yields..But if you are resourceful, you may find it still.
