residence, estate (manor / mansion land)
This house is presently owned by Forrest and Charlotte Lucas, founders and owners of Lucas Oil Products. It was originally built for Steven Hilbert, at the time CEO of Conseco. Hilbert was for a time the highest paid CEO in the country at $100 million a year. He was forced to move from this home after he was required to pay back $300 million to Conseco by the courts. Conseco took possession in 2006, it was sold to the Lucas family in 2010.
The 23,000-square-foot house and 40 acres of property. There are heroic murals, gilded wood molding on the ballroom ceiling and intricately carved banisters on a gigantic stairway, covered by navy carpet dotted by fleurs-de-lys.
The home's decoration blends English, French and neoclassical touches. The sports barn has a basketball court lined like Assembly Hall and decked with 11 red banners touting Indiana University's feats. It also features a lodgelike fireplace and bar, with a working gong hung from a boar's head mount.
