Construction on this grand building started in 1848. The first floor houses the Aububon Insectarium, and the remaining floors are for federal offices. The building features a fine marble hall on the second floor, built to resemble a Greek temple. The granite facade exterior was added in the 1920s. Originally, the building was to have a large rotunda on top, however the the idea was scrapped as the building began to sink into the soft soil from the existing weight.
