residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast
Tudor cottage residence of Katherine Hoyt Perin and her husband consulting engineer and founding force behind Tata Steel, Charles Page Perin.
Katherine, widow of Colgate, Hoyt married Charles Page Perin in 1925. They soon after moved to this tudor style cottage on 4 acres of the former Colgate Hoyt estate. The Eastover Farm boathouse was constructed in a similar Tudor style so it is possible that this cottage was constructed as one of the Eastover Farm estate buildings at about the same time (c. 1891).
A small portion of this lot at the road side is the former site of the Centre Island one room school house. It stood abandoned for many years and was sold off by the school district in 1931. The building was moved down the road where it was incorporated into the Irvin cottage.
The house was subsequently owned for over 50 years by Harriet Dudgeon Kohler Seaman and her son Henry Bogart "Bogey" Seaman Jr.. Mrs. Seaman's grandfather was Richard Dudgeon, a self-made millionaire, and one of Brooklyn's richest citizens. Dudgeon was the inventor of the modern hydraulic pump and the owner of Peacock Point (prior to Henry P. Davison) in Lattingtown. Bogey Seaman was also a noted inventor and an "outsider" artist.
The Seamans' family had been residents of Long Island's North Shore for almost 300 years. Their ancestors were John Underhill, Samuel Willets, Thomas Hicks, William Seaman, Gideon Wright, John Townsend, Daniel Bogart and John Hegeman.
