North Lake is a small lake at about 9200 feet altitude on the east side of the Sierra Nevada crest, reachable from Bishop by road. It was much larger in the 1950s (I believe outlined by the meadow and road presently there) until a dam failure (in the 1960s?) at the east end drained it almost completely into Bishop Creek. The tail over Piute Pass into Humphries Basin begins at the road end near the west end of the residual meadow.

  • My family car-camped two summers at the campground just beyond the west end of the lake in the early 1960s, before the damn failure. I caught a large (? 5 lb?) trout there, and hiked up, on crutches, as far as Loch Leven Lake on the trail to Piute Pass.
  • Damn! Dam..... :)
